Follow The Straight & Narrow Path
The Kingdom of Heaven is governed by law and when we receive any blessing, it is by obedience to the law upon which that blessing is based (see D&C 130:20–21; 132:5). The Lord has told us that through our obedience and diligence we may gain knowledge and intelligence (see D&C 130:18–19). We may also grow spiritually (see Jeremiah 7:23–24). The Lord counsels us, “If you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God” (D&C 14:7). Our obedience is voluntary and by keeping God’s commandments, we prepare ourselves for eternal life and exaltation.

Sometimes we may think a commandment is not very important until we see the natural consequences of our own disobedience.
A man named Naaman had a dreadful disease and traveled from Syria to Israel to ask the prophet Elisha to heal him.
As an important man in his own country, he was offended when Elisha did not greet him in person but sent his servant instead.
Naaman was even more offended when he received Elisha’s message: wash seven times in the river Jordan.
“Are not [the] rivers of Damascus better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean?” he demanded. He went away in a rage.
His servants asked him: “If the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?”
Naaman eventually humbled himself. It is important to obey the prophet of God, even if it seemed a small matter. So he washed in the Jordan and was healed. (See 2 Kings 5:1–14.)

"Wherefore, men . . . are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men," 2 Nephi 2:27.

Sometimes we may think a commandment is too difficult for us to obey until we see the natural consequences of our own disobedience.
Lehi received a commandment of the Lord in a dream that Nephi and his brethren should return to Jerusalem and seek the brass plates.
They took their journey and cast lots. Laman went into the house of Laban. Laban was angry, refused and threatened to slay Laman.
Laman fled and told his brethren. They tried again with their riches. Laban robbed and threatened them but they fled.
Laman and Lemuel took out all of their frustration on Sam and Nephi until an angel intervened. They were told to go back and try again.
Nephi knew that God will give us no commandment unless He prepares a way for us to obey Him. Therefore he relied upon the Lord and was successful in obtaining the brass plates.
It was a “hard thing” when the Lord commanded Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice (see Genesis 22:1–13). Yet he chose to obey God. We too should be willing to do anything God requires.
